Kenya Skills Based Medical Project
Big Beyond Kenya seeks to utilise the skills of qualified or studying health professionals to match them with the needs of the health centres in Kenya. Many health centres in Kenya are understaffed, lacking in resources and welcome assistance from studying or qualified health care volunteers. As a volunteer you will help to support under-resourced public health clinics and also carry out cross-learning workshops with staff in the clinics. Big beyond medical volunteers will also have the opportunity help our staff in providing social care to an elderly home near Limuru or after-school programmes with nearby schools.
Through working both in the health centres and on our other project areas Big Beyond volunteers will get a broad experience of life in Kenya and help us make a sustainable difference.

Volunteering in Big Beyond’s Medical project will see you based out of Limuru. This is a great base if you want to take daytrips into Nairobi to do some shopping, eat at one of Nairobi’s numerous restaurants or visit the elephant orphanage or giraffe sanctuary. There’s so much to see and do in Nairobi and our team are happy to give you advice on what to see while you’re here. The Great Rift Valley passes very close to Limuru also and day trips to see it are also a highlight. It’s a volcanic valley stretching down through East Africa and it has an array of hikes and day trips on dormant volcanoes and walks within the valley.
Kenya is one of the top safari destinations in the world with many natural reserves for you to visit. It’s also home to the great migration of wildebeest, zebra, and Thomson’s gazelle migrate from the Serengeti Plains in Tanzania to the Masai Mara Reserve in Kenya every year during July to October. All members of the “Big Five” (lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino) are found in the Masai Mara Reserve and make for an unforgettable African safari experience. If you’d like advice on arranging a safari during your volunteer stay with us please don’t hesitate to contact us.
Kenya also has an incredible amount of activities to do on the coast near Mombasa. A short plane journey from Nairobi airport the Kenyan coast offers incredible snorkelling, diving, surfing and other water sports. We generally recommend to arrange this trip at the end of your trip to give yourself time to acclimatise to the weather in Kenya.
Whether you are a qualified medical professional or actively engaged in your studies, Big Beyond has a host of opportunities for you to gain experience and share knowledge with local qualified health professionals. This is a great opportunity to learn about providing care with limited resources during your time at the public health centres. Big Beyond is delighted to help you use your skills at your placement in the health centres but most importantly we want to facilitate cross-learning between you and the staff at the centres. We currently have placements available in various departments including the laboratory, maternity, paediatric and child-care units, comprehensive care clinic (HIV & TB patients), counselling, orthopaedics, administration, outpatient care and the pharmacy. Please contact us to discuss what is possible as placements in specific departments can depend on availability.
