Career Break Volunteer Project – Kenya

There are many reasons people think about taking a career break, including stress, boredom of their routine and the desire to do something completely different. People also often “fall” into a career path and realize after a while this may not be what they want for their future. A career break can help you discover what you do want from life, both professionally and personally.

Volunteering during your career break can open up a whole new realm of possibilities. You can apply your skills and knowledge in a developing country, benefiting and empowering a whole community; or you can try something completely different and gain a whole new set of skills. Regardless, volunteering can only serve to benefit your career as you work alongside a diverse team in an international setting, develop your leadership skills, discover new skills and maybe even learn a new language.

Our projects in Kenya provide the perfect setting for volunteering during your career break. With education, health and community empowerment projects in Limuru (an hour outside Nairobi) and conservation projects in the Maasai Mara, we can work together to shape a project that will allow you to get the most from your career break.

I just grew so tired of staring out the window every day wondering if this was it! I loved my job and I was good at it, but I just knew I needed to do something different; I needed to challenge myself. That’s why I took a career break and went to volunteer with Big Beyond for two months. Initially, it was just for a change of scenery and because I wanted to give back in some way but my experience there genuinely changed my life – I learned so much about myself and my priorities. Looking back now it was the best decision I ever made.” Miranda, UK

The Great Rift Valley passes very close to Limuru also and day trips to see it are also a highlight. It’s a volcanic valley stretching down through East Africa and it has an array of hikes and day trips on dormant volcanoes and walks within the valley.
