Big Beyond Tanzania Volunteer Projects
The Big Beyond Tanzania project is located near Moshi in the Kilimanjaro region in the foothills of Mount Kilimanjaro in northern Tanzania. Our Big Beyond base is in the village of Mdawi and is home to incredibly friendly people who warmly welcome our staff and volunteers as part of their community.
This project is for you if you want to get to experience a new culture, live in an amazing village with incredible people and work alongside a passionate team that is dedicated to empowering this community through education and training.
As part of our project you’ll work alongside many members of the community and get to know them and their culture, including teenagers, adults, vulnerable people and members of the Maasai tribe.
You can choose to help us by joining one of the following volunteer projects:
Rural Education and Community Development Project
This project gives you a hands-on opportunity to contribute to our work on the Global Goals for 2020. Education is recognised internationally as one of the most vital tools in combating poverty, empowering individuals and strengthening communities. This is incredibly true in Tanzania and you can help us continue to make a difference by joining our programme. All our projects are identified from a needs assessment with our community partners you’ll work with us to achieve set goals from these assessments. You’ll lend your skills and passion to our structured programmes to help us improve education opportunities in this community.
Maasai Tribe Empowerment Project
Many members of the Maasai tribe have never gone to school and can therefore not read or write. This means their employment opportunities are limited, which has a knock on effect on their families and communities. This project seeks to overcome this challenge by teaching Maasai adults to read and write in Swahili, as well as some basic English language instruction. The impact of this project is immediate – seeing an adult write his name for the first time in his life or watching someone read a full sentence for the first time is a direct result of volunteer engagement.
Gender Empowerment Project
Big Beyond’s gender empowerment project uses your skills and experiences to creatively engage our community on gender equality. You’ll help us carry out our work empowering women’s support groups and engaging youth in gender issues. This project seeks to use education, workshops and support groups engaging men and women and boys and girls to empower communities and foster gender equality.
